Udaipur, famously known as the Venice of the East is a beautiful city in the southernmost part of the Indian State of Rajasthan. It was originally the capital of the Kingdom of Mewar and now proudly carries the heritage and history of Rajasthan and its royals.
The city has a lot of things to offer to travelers and backpackers. I traveled the city in the month of December and got a good enough chance to explore this beautiful place. City Palace, Lake Pichola, Sajjangarh fort are some of the famous spots of the city.
Here I am , bringing to you some lesser known places of the city which I got a chance to explore. Some on my own and through fellow recommendations.
Eat at Paliwal Restaurant
Trying out local cuisine of a place is one of my favorite things to do. It gives me a sense of inclusiveness. Remember the vendor in our home town whom we all go to almost everyday . I am talking about that.
Paliwal is known for its amazing Kachori and Aloo Vada. You cannot have enough of it. You just cannot.
I went there everyday, sometimes thrice a day to have that plate of deliciousness. They knew me by my name by the time I was leaving Udaipur. That is the beauty of being at a place now, isn’t it. Interacting with locals and really being there.
It’s about 5 mins walk from Jagadish temple. A plate of Kachori will cost you 10 INR.
Miniature Painting at Sakshi Art School
Udaipur is famous for its miniature paintings. Although I am not much of an art person but these paintings symbolize the rich culture of Rajasthan. Made on silk or ivory canvas, these paintings are made using organically synthesized colors using brushes of squirrel hair. I was blown away when I learnt this. Their price depends on the intricacy and detailing done in the paintings.
Sakshi School of Arts is located right beside Zostel Udaipur and houses some amazing paintings. I scouted the entire market but they had the best paintings at the most reasonable rate. You must visit and grab some for yourself.
I ended up buying a frame of 3 and 2 separate ones. The owner was sweet enough to gift me one small one as well.
Hike to Neemach Mata Mandir : Beautiful Sunrise
I absolutely love watching a sunrise. I like a dreamy sunset too but there is something special about a sunrise. A hope, something to look forward to. Where sunset is the melody of love, a sunrise is the definition of growth , a symbol of hope and light.
If you are anything like me, you must watch the sunrise from the Neemach Mata Mandir. You can see the entire city from here and at sunrise, you can see it light up with the first rays of the sun. It is one of the most beautiful sunrises I have seen in my life and trust me when I say that I have seen many 🙂 .
You can reach the base of the temple in an Ola Cab, from there it is about 15 minutes hike and there you have it. Check the sunrise time the night before.and plan to reach there accordingly.
In winters , it rises at about 7:10 to 7:20 am.
Cycle by the side of Fateh Sagar Lake
After you have witnessed the amazing sunrise at the Neemach Mata mandir, you can rent out a bicycle and cycle by the side of the Fateh Sagar Lake . Udaipur has a lot of offline and online bike rental platforms. There is one at 5 minutes walk from the Neemach Mata Mandir .
The experience is so fulfilling. Udaipur in general is crowded but in mornings, it looks absolutely beautiful. You can see some people out for morning walks , some youngsters running and to my surprise they have a cycling lane on that route (Next to Fateh Sagar Lake) Wide empty roads, lake side and a bike ride. What else do you need to make your morning absolutely blissful.
After this , you can also go to Badi Lake and sit peacefully and have your own time. A lesser known lake , Badi Lake is beautiful and quiet. You can spend some quality time by yourself here.
Hike to Karni Mata before sunset : Full view of lit up Udaipur
Udaipur ropeway is a famous tourist attraction that takes you to the Karni Mata Temple and is a beautiful experience.
But I hiked up the temple which is an amazing experience. You can reach to the temple by stairs starting from Manikyalal Verma Park. From there you get a panoramic view of the entire city : Lake Pichola, lake palace, Sajjangarh fort and Dudh Talai. The entire city is lit up and it is a sight to behold.
Even if you end up taking the rope way, do stay for some time and take in the beauty of this city.
P.S. My photographs do absolutely no justice to that moment. Also, it was the last night of my trip so I was emotional and wanted to have my own time so did not click many 🙂
Take a morning walk at Gangour Ghat
Although the ghats in Udaipur are beautiful all day long, but there is a sense of peacefulness that you feel in the morning. Just walk at those ghats, sit and delve in your thoughts , walk on the streets , cross the bridge and explore the other side .
Go out, there is no defined thing to do. Just make your own way, explore and create your own journey. Walking is the best way to explore any place, to make it your own , a part of yourself that you can take with you and cherish forever.
Cultural Show at Bagore ki Haveli
This is not so unique , but I still included this because this is something you should never miss whenever you are in Udaipur.
A one of its kind cultural show, it showcases the history of dance and culture of Rajasthan, mainly the origin of different dance forms. It is right next to Gangour Ghat.
There are two shows, 7:00 to 8 :00 pm and 8:00 to 9:00 pm The ticket counter opens at 6 pm and you must get there to get your hands on the ticket as it is quite popular. You can also book for the next day for convenience.
That is it. My version of Udaipur.
Please comment below if you have some recommendations for me. If you end up trying any of the above do let me know. It would mean a lot to me.
